The Piezoelectric Phenomenon

One of the things that still fills me with awe about the human body is this: we are not only biochemical. We are also bioelectrical.

Deep in your connective tissue, in the fascia that wraps around every muscle and bone, something remarkable happens. The collagen fibers there carry what scientists call the piezoelectric effect. When gentle, sustained pressure or stretch is applied, tiny electrical charges are generated within the tissue itself.

Let that settle for a moment. Pressure and movement can create electrical activity in your body.

This is part of why touch matters. Part of why movement matters. Part of why slowing down and listening to the body matters so deeply.

How this shapes the way I work

In myofascial release, I apply sustained pressure and gentle, intentional stretch into the fascial system. I am never trying to force change. Force is not how the body opens.

Instead, I am creating an environment. A space where the tissue and the nervous system feel safe enough to begin reorganizing, to gently unwind patterns they have held for years, and to communicate in a new way. I meet your body exactly where it is, and I let it lead.

This is the quiet, patient work that reaches the places other approaches often skim past.

Fascia is alive

For a long time, fascia was treated as simple packing material, the wrapping around the parts that mattered. We know now that this is far from true.

Research continues to explore how fascia works not only as structure, but as a living sensory and communication network. Scientists are studying its connection to:

  • Pain patterns

  • Inflammation

  • Posture and alignment

  • Tension and restriction

  • Hydration

  • The way our cells send signals to one another

  • Even the emotions we hold in the body

Fascia is alive. Responsive. Adaptive. Profoundly intelligent.

Your body is always speaking

I have come to believe that the body is in constant conversation with us. It speaks through tension and restriction. Through pain and sensation. Through emotion, and through ease.

Most of us were never taught to listen. We push through, we override, we ask the body to keep going long after it has asked us to rest.

Myofascial release creates the space for that conversation to finally happen. As the fascia softens, your nervous system settles, and your body begins to shift out of stress and into balance. This is the path I return to again and again with everyone I work with. Safety, then release, then restore.

Why I am still in awe

The more I learn about the body, the more amazed I am by its innate capacity to heal.

Given the right support, given safety and patience and gentle hands, the body knows how to adapt, reorganize, and restore its own balance. My work is simply to create the conditions and then trust the wisdom that was there all along. This is how healing reaches far beyond the surface, into the quiet places where lasting change begins.

If you are curious what this feels like in the body, you can read What Is Myofascial Release or Understanding the Healing Crisis After Myofascial Release. When you feel ready, I would love to work with you.
